Opportunities to join the lab!

If you are interested in joining our research group, please feel free to reach out to Dr. Kelly Aho with your CV and a brief summary of your research interests, research experiences, and why you want to work with us. We highly recommend applying for fellowships (e.g., NSF GRFP) and are happy to discuss writing an application on a topic related to our ongoing research.

Update Nov 5, 2025 - PhD position open for Fall 2026.

The position will focus on greenhouse gas (i.e., CO2, CH4, and N2O) dynamics in inland waters.  Inland waters are “active players” in carbon and nitrogen cycles; they simultaneously transform and transport large amounts of carbon and nitrogen.  Some of these transformations produce greenhouse gases, making inland waters natural sources of these climate-relevant gases.  The future student will have flexibility in choosing a research topic related to greenhouse gas production and/or emission.  Potential research themes include novel real-time monitoring, terrestrial-aquatic linkages, gas exchange, etc.  The research will include a combination of field observation, laboratory analysis, big data (e.g., NEON data), and modeling. Students will be expected to share their results through conferences presentations and peer-reviewed journal articles.

Students with strong interest in the research topics listed above are encouraged to apply.  Minimum qualifications include a B.A. or B.S. by Fall 2026 in a related field (e.g., biology, geology, chemistry, ecology, earth science, environmental science, environmental engineering, hydrology) and research and/or field experience.  In addition, M.S. or other full-time research experience (i.e., experience as a research technician or lab manager) by Fall 2026 is highly desired.

Feel free to reach out to discuss the position! Please email kellyaho@bu.edu with your CV, unofficial transcripts, and a brief statement on why you are interested in the position.

The BU application deadline is Dec 3, 2025. Read more about the application process here: https://www.bu.edu/biology/biology-graduate-program/apply-grad/
